Certified, Notarized, or Apostille?
They Are Not the Same Thing.

Certified Translation
A complete English translation of your foreign document, accompanied by a signed Certificate of Accuracy from the translator attesting that the translation is complete and accurate.
This is what USCIS, immigration courts, federal agencies, state courts, most universities, and NYC public schools require for foreign-language documents.
Notarized Translation
A certified translation where the translator's signature on the Certificate of Accuracy is also notarized by a licensed notary public. The notary verifies the translator's identity and signature — they do not certify the translation accuracy itself.
Some private institutions (certain banks, employers, and foreign-based institutions) require notarization in addition to certification.
Apostille
An Apostille is not a translation. It is a government seal that authenticates the original document itself for use in a foreign country that is a member of the Hague Convention. If you need to use a U.S. document abroad, you may need an Apostille on the original, and separately, a translation of it.

A certified translation includes a signed Certificate of Accuracy from the translator stating that the translation is complete and accurate. This is what USCIS, courts, and government agencies require. A notarized translation goes one step further — a licensed notary public also verifies the translator's identity and notarizes their signature on the certificate.
